Old Headingley 1-0 Kartiers FC Kartiers FC crashed out of the Barkston Ash FA Cup at the semi-final stage for the third season running and only have themselves to blame after missing a string of chances during a second half which they totally dominated. This replayed tie, the original game in January abandoned on ninety minutes with the score at 2-2 due to poor pitch conditions, gave Kartiers a second chance of cup glory after performing poorly during the first game. Old Headingley took the lead on twenty minutes when a long ball deceived Richard Taylor and a Headingley forward somehow managed to squeeze the ball home from what appeared to be an impossible angle. Kartiers were unable to string two passes together during a simply awful first half of football with only a Michael Braithwaite free-kick which flew narrowly wide giving cause for optimism. The second half was a different story all together with Kartiers streaming forward as messrs Hewitt and Stephenson grasped control of the midfield and wideman Jon James, a spectator during a torrid first half, finally giving the Headingley defence problems down the left flank. Kartiers claims for a penalty midway through the half were waved away by the assistant referee who claimed the offence took place outside the box after James was flattened by a Headingley defender. The incident appeared to take place two foot inside the Headingley penalty area but the linesman incredibly advised the referee that the offence had taken place outside the box. This was one of a series of decisons which infuriated players, management and spectators and unfortunately became the major talking point after the game. In truth, some of the offside decisions given by both assistant referees seemed to be more akin to how the game was officiated in a bygone age as they constantly flagged for offside despite the penalised player not interfering with play. Littlewood headed over from six yards out from a James corner, Tweedie also failed to find the net from a similar chance and Crowther flashed a shot wide from distance as Kartiers piled on the pressure. In the closing moments Woodall broke clear but with only the keeper to beat he screwed his shot wide of the post and in the last minute a Crowther shot fell at the feet of James who incredibly skied the chance over the bar from only three yards out. Manager Ian Jennings described the result as 'gutting' and was particularly scathing about the performance of the match officials. 'People will call it sour grapes but in the original tie at 2-1 up the linesman gave a penalty against us when the initial offence took place outside the box and today the same linesman didnt give a penalty when the offence took place inside the box. He can go home and enjoy his Saturday evening whilst I have to try and lift the spirits of a squad of players who may never get the chance of playing in a Barkston Ash FA Cup Final.' He added, ''Regardless of some of the quite shocking decisions we still had enough chances to win many a game and we cant blame anybody but ourselves for that, we started poorly but got stronger and stronger as the game went on and if we had managed to grab an equalizer I have no doubt we would have gone on to win the game but it wasnt to be and good luck to Old Headingley in the final.'
