Swillington Saints 0-4 Kartiers FC Kartiers FC cruised into the last eight of the Barkston Ash Cup with a comfortable 4-0 victory over an overly physical Swillington side who may be Saints by name but not by nature. Swillington's rough house tactics and attempted intimidation from the touchline failed to put a youthful Kartiers off their stride with manager Ian Jennings delighted to have got through the game with no injuries. During an online interview with www.kartiersfc.co.uk he commented 'I warned the players beforehand that the opposition may be a touch physical but some of the challenges, in my opinion, were embarrassing and extremely dangerous. It was an intimidating atmosphere and the boys did well not to get drawn into playing a game that doesnt suit us.' Young striker Steve Gillick was in the starting eleven for the first time this season, replacing top scorer James Tweedie who was rested, whilst James Barrett and Michael Braithwaite replaced Josh O'Neill and Luke Crowther respectively. The tone of the game was set early on with Michael Braithwaite the victim of what can only be described as a 'crude' two footed challenge which went unpunished. Braithwaite did well to walk away unscathed and responded in fine style by surging forward and striking a low drive into the back of the Swillington net from the edge of the box after only nine minutes. Andy Woodall doubled the Kartiers lead five minutes later with a typically rasping rising shot from distance after good work by Dave Hawe. The game then degenerated into a non event with Kartiers content to sit on their lead whilst Swillington offered no threat in attack although Kartiers were indebted to a last gasp tackle by Richard Taylor and a stunning Osborne save from point blank range which prevented the West Yorkshire League side from getting back into the game. The closing stages of the first half and the majority of the second half offered little for the large crowd to get excited about although Matt Stephenson's performance at the heart of the Kartiers midfield was one of the few highlights. Jon James continued his recent rich vein of form with some spell binding wing play but it was stiker Andy Woodall who eventually stole the show with two late strikes to complete his hat trick. Youngster Adam Tessyman made his first team debut and almost made it a dream debut in the dying seconds when he burst through on goal but struck his shot weakly at the Swillington keeper. This Saturday Kartiers travel to Bishopthorpe for a York FA Senior Cup tie whilst the Reserves once again find themselves with a blank weekend. The honeymoon is clearly over for new 2nd X1 manager David Lyon who saw his side slump to a 4-1 defeat at Haxby in the Reserve League Cup. Reserve B side Haxby stunned Kartiers with a three goal blast inside the opening ten minutes and despite Anthony Jennings' second goal of the season Haxby claimed a fourth on the hour mark to put the game beyond there higher league opposition. so far this season.
