Copmanthorpe 0-3 Kartiers FC Kartiers FC's league campaign was firmly put back on track with a thumping 3-0 victory over third placed Copmanthorpe. After the previous week's disappointing 1-1 draw at lowly Tockwith, Kartiers manager Ian Jennings recalled Matt Stephenson and Jon James but his plans were dealt a blow in the warm up with Andrew Woodall breaking down due to a knee injury leaving Kartiers with only two substitutes. Steve Gillick joined James Tweedie in attack whilst Paul Taylor made a rare first team outing in defence in place of his brother Richard who was unavailable due to holiday commitments. Kartiers stated their intent within two minutes of the kick off when Daniel Hewitt headed home a Jon James corner only for the referee to disallow the goal and have the corner retaken. Four minutes later, however, Kartiers did take the lead when Gillick and Tweedie combined to set up Glen Littlewood who fired home from just inside the box. The extremely strong wind, rain and hail was right into the Kartiers faces but they played with such composure that Copmanthorpe appeared to have no advantage at all. The Kartiers defence of Crowther, Richardson and Taylor were simply immense as they stifled any threat that Copmanthorpe offered whilst Osborne in the Kartiers goal had little to do other than retrieve the ball from behind his goal. Daniel Hewitt was the undoubted star of the show though as he controlled the midfield with great aplomb and assisted by the youthful Braithwaite they comfortably reached half time with a crucial one goal advantage. Minutes into the restart Braithwaites expertly flighted free kick was headed home by Littlewood for his second of the game and his third of the season. The strong wind and rain bizarrely gave way to clear skies and sunshine much to the frustration of the Kartiers defence who were rather hoping for some respite after battling the elements in the first half. Copmanthorpe did manage to exert some pressure on the Kartiers goal but Osborne's fine save and Stephenson's clearance off the line retained the visitors two goal advantage. On the break Kartiers were mesmeric with Gillick twice denied when clean through but the young striker finally netted his first goal for the club on seventy minutes. Tweedie's intelligence and smart turn allowed him to send Jon James racing down the left and the Kartiers wingman provided the inch perfect pass into the heart of the Copmanthorpe penalty area where Gillick was on hand to blaze the ball into the roof of the net. Braithwaite should have made it four just before the final whistle when clean through with only the keeper to beat but he pulled his shot wide of the left hand post. This was an excellent performance which had manager Ian Jennings beaming after the game, 'I was going to say that's as good as it gets but with this side I know we can get better'. He added, 'Andrew Woodall's injury is a major blow and we dont know how long he will be out but young Steve Gillick took his place in attack and was tremendous'. Meanwhile the 2nd X1 produced what caretaker manager Simon Brown described as an 'abysmal' performance whilst crashing to a humiliating 8-0 league defeat at the hands of Huntington.
