Kartiers FC 2-2 Aberford Albion FC AET (Kartiers FC won 4-3 on penalties) Kartiers FC overcame a massive hurdle in their pursuit of the Barkston Ash FA Cup with a penalty shoot out victory over cup holders and perennial cup favourites Aberford Albion. Kartiers were far from at full strength for their first of a trio of cup quarter final appearances with the previous weeks two goal hero Glen Littlewood unavailable whilst injury victims Andrew Woodall and James Barrett both pushing themselves through the pain barrier and declaring themselves fit for a place on the substitutes bench. In over twenty years of local football as player and manager, Kartiers FC's Ian Jennings had never been on the winning side against Aberford and the signs did not look good as Aberford took the lead after only six minutes, a fine strike from distance deceiving Kartiers keeper Tom Osborne in the swirling wind. Kartiers response brought much hope as the young Selby side took the game to their more physical and experienced opposition and created a series of half chances with Braithwaite and Gillick both forcing saves from ex Selby Town FC goalkeeper Potter. Matt Stephenson excelled in the Kartiers midfield whilst the major threat came from the left as Jon James tormented the Aberford defence constantly. Aberford, however, finished the half as they started, in the ascendency, but found Osborne once again in fine form as he pulled off a string of fine saves. The second half didn't quite match the first half for goalmouth action with Kartiers over elaborating in front of goal but they did manage to equalise on seventy minutes when Daniel Hewitt showed tremendous technique in firing a crisp volley through a body of players and the unsighted Potter could only watch in despair as the ball crept into the bottom corner of the Aberford goal. The game became very much cat and mouse with Aberford perhaps finishing the stronger and they became clear favourites with ten minutes remaining when substitute Andrew Woodall had to leave the field of play after a sickening clash of heads. With all three permitted substitutes already on the field Kartiers had to see out the remainder of normal time with only ten men. One assumed a back's to the wall mentality would ensure but Kartiers adventurous 3-4-2 formation paid dividends three minutes into the second period of extra time. Jon James, who had teased the Aberford defence all day, burst from his own half, turned the Aberford right back until he was dizzy before sliding the ball under Potter's despairing dive to give the Selby side an unlikely lead. Aberford's frustration boiled over moments later with an Aberford midfield player finally finding the way to stop James' dazzling runs, the crudest of two footed challenges resulting in a second yellow and the inevitable red card. The visitors threw everything forward but Kartiers appeared to have weathered the storm until the fourth minute of injury time when a corner from the left was headed back across goal and an Aberford defender was left unmarked to head home from barely a yard out. The final whistle followed almost immediately with Aberford celebrating as though they had won the tie but they found Osborne in unbelievable form in the resulting penalty shoot out. Osborne saved two of the first three Aberford penalties and despite Gareth Rhodes penalty miss, James Tweedie, Liam Olsson, Josh O'Neill and Luke Crowther all converted from twelve yards to knock out the cup holders and send Kartiers into the semi final of the Barkston Ash cup for the third year running. Kartiers FC Reserves made it a cup winning double for the club with a 2-0 win against Garforth WMC Reserves in the Barkston Ash FA Burton Cup. Adam Tessyman and Jamie Adamson were on the mark for the Kartiers second string.
