Kartiers FC 1-0 Thorpe United York FA Senior Cup holders Kartiers FC moved a step closer to retaining the trophy they won in May as they reached the semi-final of this seasons competition after a hard fought victory over Thorpe United. Manager Ian Jennings selected the same eleven that defeated Aberford Albion the previous week whilst Matt Cooper and Paul Taylor took their place on the bench in place of the injured Andrew Woodall and the unavailable Gareth Rhodes. The game was switched to Thorpe after an early morning pitch inspection deemed the James Street Ground unfit to play on due to the recent heavy rain. Despite the late switch a large crowd gathered to witness a genuine blood and thunder local derby. Kartiers were lively in attack and the pace of Jon James and former Thorpe player James Tweedie caused countless problems for a rather one paced Thorpe defence. Hewitt and Stephenson have been the linchpins of all that has been good for Kartiers in recent weeks and today was no different as they battled hard to get a grip of the midfield battle. Tackles flew in from all directions and referee Peter Hartley did well to keep both sides in check as passions ran high. James Tweedie broke the deadlock on twenty minutes when Mitchell's poorly directed header fell sweetly to Tweedie who volleyed the ball home from the edge of the Thorpe penalty area. Kartiers were however surprisingly nervous in defence and Thorpe should have drawn level when Wood found space in the Kartiers box only to see Osborne pull off a remarkable save from almost point blank range. Thorpe dominated possession but did very little with it and when the sides turned around for the second half Kartiers not only had the opposition to battle but also the elements as a strong wind was now blowing directly in their faces. Josh O'Neill typified what Kartiers are all about with a gutsy performance down the right flank which belied his tender years and the way the Kartiers youngsters responded to some over zealous challenges was a delight to see. Thorpe continued to dominate but apart from the save from Wood, Osborne in the Kartiers goal had no real save to make during the second period. Forest should have done better from twelve yards out but shot tamely at Osborne and the same player than stood in disbelief as Richard Taylor put his body on the line when blocking an absolute thunderbolt from distance. Kartiers were content to hit Thorpe on the break and could have increased their lead when Tweedie broke clear but Kartiers leading scorer dragged his shot wide. Cooper also had a chance late on but Tweedie's first half volley was ultimately enough as Kartiers knocked Thorpe out of the cup for the second time this season having defeated them in the League Cup in September. An understandably happy Ian Jennings praised his sides battling qualities during what he called 'an extremely tough game.' He added, 'The players enjoy these local derbies but I dont, they put years on me! There were a few former Kartiers players in the Thorpe side which gave it that extra spice so to come through the tie and reach the semi-final just made the victory that bit more special.'
